Tooth Contact Patterns Tell the Story on Differential Wear:
When you're reapiring or rebuilding any differential, it's a good idea to look at the contact patterns on the individual teeth of the gears.
Shown below are a number of undesireable tooth wear patterns as they appear on the driven gear, aling with an explanation of why they're formed... and suggested remedies for their correction.
Of course, the correct tooth contact pattern must be maintained for top performance.

OUT OF POSITION PATTERN |
| Cause: Pinion too far from cone center.
Remedy: Move pinion toward cone center. |

OUT OF POSITION PATTERN |
| Cause: Pinion too close to cone center.
Remedy: Move pinion away from cone center. |

CROSS PATTERN |
| Cause: Shafts do not intersect.
Remedy: Line up shafts. |
 |
CROSS PATTERN |
| Cause: Shafts do not intersect.
Remedy: Line up shafts. |

TOE PATTERN |
| Cause: Shaft angle too large.
Remedy: Correct the shaft angle. |
 |
HEEL PATTERN |
| Cause: Shaft angle too small.
Remedy: Correct the shaft angle. Decrease toward minimum backlash. |
